Catalogue “Flying Furniture”

Flying Furniture is an absorbing chronicle of the Tecta furniture factory, which has been redefining modernism for almost sixty years. Erudite contributions by Jörg Stürzebecher, Peter Smithson and others trace the history of this powerhouse of contemporary design, and of a tradition, begun by Karl-Friedrich Schinkel’s cast-iron chairs and the avant-garde Bauhaus masterpieces of Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius, that is alive and well today. Alison & Peter Smithson once wrote that when they were young, they designed the house of the future so that it would gradually become the house of the present. In many ways, this is also true of Tecta’s designs.
