F51N @ 3daysofdesign
KJELLERUP VÆVERI

F51N & Kjellerup Væveri
at the 3daysofdesign

We are looking forward to a special highlight: during this year’s 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen, the iconic F51 armchair by Walter Gropius will be on show as a special edition: F51N, reworked by Katrin Greiling and upholstered with the characteristic fabrics of Danish textile artist Hanne Vedel.

Hanne Vedel celebrates 70 years as an independent weaver in 2025 – an impressive legacy that is visible in the timeless fabrics. The broad stripe patterns and natural feel give the Bauhaus classic a new, elegant dimension.

The fabrics for this edition come from the traditional weaving mill Kjellerup Væveri, which has been known for decades for its exceptional craftsmanship. Kjellerup Væveri is not only the manufacturer of the woven fabrics, but also the organizer of the exhibition during 3daysofdesign – a true interplay of craftsmanship, tradition and timeless design.

Three examples of the armchair with Hanne Vedel’s fabrics will be on display during the 3 Days of Design from June 18 to 20.

Gropius with a new twist

The new F51N by Katrin Greiling: with traditional danish fabrics and new colours, the designer develops the Bauhaus anniversary in a surprisingly colourful way.

»I want to find the right balance – between the strict chair, between wood and a tactile fabric.« That could be the formal recipe Katrin Greiling has been using since 2018 to dedicate herself to the F51 Gropius chair and its transformation. But it is more – it seems to be a small declaration of love for a chair that she passionately breaks down into three forms in order to change and see it anew again and again. And in doing so, she hits the nerve of the time: combining tradition and modernity while creating lasting surprise effects.

Already in 2019, Katrin Greiling inspired with the colourfully accentuated F51N for the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus. Four years later, she is developing the theme further: Katrin Greiling is currently combining the high-gloss lacquer with tactile fabrics that create a strong statement in the hands and through their broad striped patterns. Stripes are a tradition – both at Gropius and at Tecta. For her fabrics, she has chosen a historic weaving mill in the north of Denmark: Kjellerup Væveri, which is deeply rooted in Nordic tradition with classic furniture textiles. Patterns and designs have been developed over the last 30 years by weaver and designer Hanne Vedel. Characteristic of the work of the now 88-year-old is that she develops products on the handloom and in close contact with her material.

Katrin Greiling came into contact with Hanne Vedel‘s designs early on: »When I saw the textiles for the first time 20 years ago, I was immediately impressed by the feel and the unusual colour combinations. I was practically waiting for the right project to be able to use them.« Greiling combines both the textiles from Kjellerup and the Danish manufacturer Kvadrat with high-gloss lacquers for the new F51N. »When I work with colour concepts, I always relate to the material as well and try to create a dissonance here. Cool colour nuances in contrast to warm materials create a deliberate tension.« This creates a subtle puzzle in which colour, form and fabric form a surprising alliance. »This has the twist that Gropius would never have done,« Katrin Greiling admits with a laugh. »I‘m a fan of slow consumption and thinking carefully about what you bring into the house. Furniture is made here that will give pleasure for the next 100 years.«
