Unique objects with echo
edition K
D4 by Kerstin Bruchhäuser
We all know them: the oil painting of the fisherman with the pipe, the beautiful Spanish woman or the reading woman – they take us back in time. Memories of our grandparents’ favourite pub, aunts in the black forest or holidays in the summer house. Because the paintings were always hanging somewhere – and are now part of the collective memory of an entire generation.
In her special edition for the Tecta Kragstuhlmuseum, artist Kerstin Bruchhäuser is also interested in playing with these traditional perspectives and breaking them open. Whether a Spanish woman, a fisherman or a sailing boat on a mountain lake – she has rediscovered these familiar motifs in tapestry embroideries and used them to develop covers for Marcel Breuer’s D4 folding chair. The echo of the past meets the iconic chair and the transformation from the familiar into the unknown can begin.
Kerstin Bruchhäuser has created five unique armchairs with covers made of patched tapestry fabric. They transform any room into a private collection. With its play of textile colours, the special edition creates an expressive contrast to the nickel-plated tubular steel frames of the D4. At the same time, it continues Kerstin Bruchhäuser’s artistic exploration – placing the legacy of previous generations in contemporary contexts. And in doing so, to reveal new connections: After all, on closer inspection, are the pixel worlds of today and the embroidery pictures of yesteryear so far apart from one another?
